The Magic Formula Works its Wonder Today Part 4

The people of earlier times depended on the rich resource of plants and herbs to cure them of various ailments and maladies. The world has changed a lot but not the basics of life. Even today, many of the life sustaining drugs are procured from natural resources instead of the fact that man has progressed leaps and bounds.

Many of thousand of years old remedies go unnoticed because we have become oblivious of our immediate surroundings. Hoodia Gordonii, the cactus with miraculous effect on appetite is one such plant whose use remained limited to the tribal people of South Africa and it is only recently that the world has come to know of its unique quality. The 20,000 old San tribe used it to curb the appetite while going on long hunting expedition. It was a life sustaining plant for this simple tribe. One of the members of San tribe says, 'I learned how to eat it from my forefathers?. It is my food, my water and a medicine for me.'

The surprising effect of this plant came to limelight accidentally in 1996 while searching a medicine for HIV/AIDS. It was then discovered that Hoodia Gordonii is an appetite suppressant that can be used to reduce unwanted weight. Obesity is emerging as a great problem for the people of western countries. Presently, about a 100 million people are suffering from obesity. It has reached a dangerous point for them. These anxious obese people spend a considerable amount of money to ward of the health hazard related to it.

Millions of dollars are spent on dieting- industry with no satisfactory outcome. The synthetic drugs are either not useful or have a short- term effect. With Hoodia, there is an answer to this problem. It is an appetite-suppressant, which works on the appetite and roots out the primary cause of obesity. When appetite vanishes, the food intake is surely going to come down.

There is one more positive effect of Hoodia with which, it is going to enrich its originators. With a scramble of major medicine giants on the commercial production of Hoodia, efforts are on to woo the ancient tribe of San. They have been offered 5 percent of the total profit made by the sale of all Hoodia products. They would help in the cultivation of the plant at a commercial scale. This is likely to generate a number of job opportunities.

Thus, the production and cultivation of Hoodia, which has been a work very, much embedded in the cultural tradition of San people is getting a commercial dimension now. The Hoodia Gordonii plant which has served the tribe long by reducing their appetite because they did not have much to eat is now going to bring economic prosperity to this section of society that has lived at the periphery for long. Now the plant is going to provide ample food to its producers so that they do not have to stave of hunger again because of the dearth of food.
